Sports Day 2017
With Sports Day 2016 being so close in the end, with only 50 Meridian Miles separating 1st and 2nd place, Sports Day 2017 had a lot to live up to. Every student was going to have to perform at their very best to take the Sports Day cup away from West House and the overall Meridian Cup away from East House.
With that exact thought in mind, all students raised their game. After the morning’s events of shot put, javelin, discus, long jump and 800m, it was North House that went into the lead. A special mention must go to the North House year 7 students who have definitely boosted their houses sporting potential this year.
After a short interval, students were ready to take on their afternoon track events. The atmosphere as students were lead towards the Athletics track was electric, every student proud to represent their house. The chanting, celebrating, and cheering did not stop throughout the 2 hours of competition.
The track events, consisting of 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m and 4x100m relay, were tightly contested, no-one wanting their house to miss out on valuable Meridian Miles. Well done to all of the students who performed, you did yourselves and your houses proud.
After the student races had been completed, it was time for the staff to compete…and we do have some slightly competitive staff here at Meridian High School. Staff from each house competed in teams of 4 in a Tug of War competition. This very quickly ended with an East House victory.
Then came the overall results; Mr Giles announcing that it was yet again very close amongst the houses. On this occasion, WEST HOUSE were declared the winners of both sports day and the Meridian Cup. Congratulations and I hope all staff and students involved enjoy their reward trip to Thorpe Park!
A special mention must also go to a number of our students, who throughout the day, were amazing at running our charity events; a new addition to our Sports Day. Activities included: face painting, a bake sale and a fruit smoothie bike. We managed to raise well over £100 for our school charities.
Thank you to all of the staff and students that contributed to making Sports Day 2017 one to remember. I am already looking forward to the next one…’students, get practising’.
