Public Sector Equality Duty
Statement of Compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) updated 2025
Due regard for equalities
GLF Equality Objective
GLF Schools recognises and celebrates the diversity of its schools and their communities. There is a shared commitment across the Trust to develop further a culture of respect, where discrimination is not tolerated, and individuals are treated equitably and fairly and feel a sense of belonging. We strive for an inclusive environment where staff and students are comfortable to express their own identity, should they wish, in which diversity and inclusion is of mutual benefit for everyone in our school.
Equality and Diversity
Equality and diversity have always been contentious subjects; they ask us to examine ourselves in order to identify the prejudices and attitudes we hold, as well as to become conscious of the potential power our words and actions have to offend and ostracise people.
Fundamentally, Equality and Diversity are about acknowledging that everybody has a right to fair and equal treatment, irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability or any other characteristic. At Rosebery School, we are fully committed to doing everything we can to provide a curriculum that is equitable in offer and diverse in representation.
Aims
The students and staff come from a range of socio-economic backgrounds. Whilst the school is a cohesive community, we recognise the need to actively promote relationships between the various sections of society represented within the school.
Our Commitment to Equality
At Meridian High School, we fully embrace our duties under the Equality Act 2010, which provides protection from discrimination, harassment and victimisation in relation to the following protected characteristics:
-
Age
-
Disability
-
Ethnicity/Race
-
Gender/Sex
-
Gender reassignment (including those who are questioning or transitioning)
-
Marital status and civil partnership
-
Pregnancy and maternity
-
Religion or belief
-
Sexual orientation
Our Duty
As a school, we have a general duty to give due regard to equality and to actively meet the three aims of the Equality Act 2010:
-
Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and any other conduct prohibited by the Act.
-
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
-
Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
What this means in practice
Having due regard for advancing equality involves:
-
Removing or reducing disadvantages experienced by people because of a protected characteristic.
-
Taking proactive steps to meet the needs of individuals who share a protected characteristic, especially where these differ from others.
-
Encouraging and enabling participation in public life, education, and wider opportunities where under-representation exists.
Our Approach at Meridian High School
We are committed to embedding equality into all aspects of school life. This means:
-
Integrating equality into our curriculum, policies, and decision-making.
-
Promoting a culture of respect, inclusion, and high expectations for every student and staff member.
-
Ensuring that our priorities and improvement planning take account of the needs of all learners, staff, and families in our community.
