Year 11 Top of the League!
The Meridian High Year 11 Football team have had a great journey throughout this football season. From winning and dominating the league by scoring a hatful of goals and without conceding a single goal in the process.
The Croydon Cup has also been a huge success, only conceding a single goal in a close run semi-final. Sadly, the final was one hurdle the team couldn’t get past, as Meridian lost, on penalties, to Harris Crystal Palace.
The game was a scrappy affair in the first half, with both teams fight for superiority but the second half was all Meridian High. Unluckily several chances went begging for Meridian High, including a penalty kick, five minutes from the final whistle, that the Harris goalkeeper saved brilliantly.
The game ended 0-0. Extra-time ended 0-0. On to dreaded penalties.
Meridian lost the penalty shoot-out by a single penalty that was once again saved by the Harris Crystal Palace goalkeeper.
Every player that either, volunteered or stepped up to take a penalty should be commended for their courage.
It was a sad end to what was a record breaking season. The team have only conceded 1 goal in 7 games, scored 27 goals and won a trophy that Meridian High have never won and were one kick away from winning a second trophy.
That’s an excellent season and something that the team, all students, staff and parents of Meridian High School should be immensely proud of.
